Exhibition Title
WABI-SABI
Description
WABI-SABI: Seven Principles brings together the work of five emerging Sixth-Form artists in a contemplative exploration of Japanese aesthetic philosophy.
Drawing on the sensibility of Wabi-Sabi — a worldview that recognises beauty in imperfection, transience and quiet restraint — the exhibition unfolds through seven interconnected principles. Five are interpreted through painting by the participating artists: Shibumi (understated elegance), Shizen (naturalness), Kanso (simplicity), Fukinsei (asymmetry) and Datsuzoku (freedom from convention).
Two additional principles shape the curatorial structure of the exhibition itself. The concept of Yūgen, suggesting a subtle depth and quiet mystery, informs the spatial rhythm of the gallery and the relationship between the works. Seijaku, meaning tranquility, is expressed through a quiet sake tasting offered during the opening reception — extending the exhibition beyond the visual and into a shared moment of reflection.
Developed as a mentored project, the exhibition explores how philosophical ideas rooted in Japanese culture can resonate within contemporary artistic practice. Through restraint, asymmetry and silence, the works invite viewers to slow down and encounter beauty in its most understated forms
