Nomad: Perspectives on home in a changing Japan
Exhibition Title: Nomad: Perspectives on home in a changing Japan
Exhibition Description:
Nomad is a solo illustration exhibition by Molly Maine, exploring the concept of ‘home’ in a Japan shaped by globalisation, natural disasters, and remote work. With a declining population, Japan is encouraging digital nomads to boost local economies. At the same time, a new generation of Japanese people is moving beyond their hometowns—a shift in a society where generational ties to place have long been central. For others, like evacuees from the Noto earthquake, leaving home is not a choice but a necessity.
This exhibition contrasts the transient lives of digital nomads with Japan’s deep-rooted traditions, where “home” has historically been fixed and enduring. It also examines how natural disasters, such as the Noto earthquake, disrupt this sense of belonging, forcing communities to rebuild and redefine their identities. Through interviews with digital nomads, Noto evacuees, and local communities, Molly Maine explores these themes in a series of digitally illustrated, limited-edition giclée prints. This exhibition is sponsored by The Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation. Part of the proceeds will support Noto’s earthquake recovery efforts.
