PRIMA MATERIA — Where We Land
A solo exhibition by Oliver Lu

Description:
Where We Land explores the process of becoming through movement, displacement, and self-awareness. Developing from Flying Formosan, the work continues an exploration of identity through the experience of moving between different places, perspectives, and states of being. Flight becomes a metaphor for stepping outside the familiar self — creating distance from the identities, expectations, and narratives that have shaped us, in order to see them differently.

To land is not to arrive, but to become aware of where we stand.
The work draws upon Carl Jung’s concept of individuation — the lifelong process of becoming conscious of the different aspects of the psyche and gradually integrating them into a more complete sense of self. In this process, identity is not understood as something fixed or inherited, but as something continually revealed through self-awareness and transformation. Prima materia, the primordial matter from which transformation begins, becomes both a material and psychological metaphor. Through the encounter between body, material, and ground, the work asks what happens when we become aware of the parts of ourselves that have remained unseen.

To land is not to arrive at an answer, but to become conscious of where we stand.
Between flying and landing, the work traces a movement from looking outward to looking inward — from the question of who I am to the ongoing process of becoming aware of who I am becoming.
